Ondo Warns Private Hospitals To Stop Training Nurses And Midwives As They Had No Legal Right To Do So

The Ondo State Government, has warned private hospitals in the state to stop training nurses and midwives, as they had no legal right to do so.

Dr Taiye Oni, the Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Ministry of Health, gave this warning while monitoring the entrance examination into the Ondo State School of Nursing and Midwifery for the 2017/2018 session in Akure.

Oni noted that such training by the private hospitals was contributing to some sharp practices by some actors in the state health sector.

He said the State Government would not allow the trend to continue but nip it in the bud so as to ensure quality health service delivery in line with the agenda of the present administration.

The Permanent Secretary said that with the new policy of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, most Schools of Nursing and Midwifery would now award Higher National Diploma and degree certificates.

He disclosed that the state School of Nursing and Midwifery would soon be upgraded to a degree awarding institution.

UCH Trains Doctors, Nurses, Others On Pain Management

The University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, is training some doctors, nurses and other staffers on pain management to equip them to assess the condition and provide high-quality first line treatment.

Dr Adefemi Afolabi, Staff Champion Coordinator of the Pain-Free Hospital Initiative (PFHI), made the disclosure on Wednesday in Ibadan.

Afolabi, an endocrine surgeon, said the programme was being conducted in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and the American Cancer Society.

According to him, the goal of PFHI is to equip staff to assess pain, provide high-quality first line treatment to improve on the overall access to essential pain medication in Nigeria.

He said that to effectively implement pain management in a healthcare system required more than just access to medicines.

“It requires an understanding of when and how to give pain medication and prioritisation of pain management as an essential part of care.

“Over the course of one year, PFHI is to train physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare providers on how to assess pain levels and dispense medication.

“The programme is to stress the importance of pain management for patients, specifically those suffering from pain-related to cancer and HIV,’’ he said.

He added that the primary goal was to actively raise the quality of life for every Nigerian through dedicated service delivery.

According to him, the PFHI is a pilot programme to strengthen the skills of health workers and equip them to provide high-quality pain treatment to their patients in line with International Treatment Guidelines.

“The project will ensure adequate supply of pain medicines at affordable rate in hospitals and will be used appropriately.

The project will be launched at a yet-to-be announced date after training has been completed,’’ he said.

By 2050 Nigeria Will Become 3rd Most Populous Country In The World – UN

According to a new report released by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Nigeria is projected to be the world’s third most populous country by the year 2050.

The report, titled ‘World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision’, said with such development, Nigeria would overtake the United States in terms of population just as world population would reach 9.8 billion people.

The report partly reads “by 2050, the third most populous country will be Nigeria, which currently ranks seventh, and which is poised to replace the United States. Among the 10 largest countries of the world, one is in Africa (Nigeria).

Amongst these, Nigeria’s population, currently the seventh largest in the world, is growing the most rapidly. Consequently, the population of Nigeria is projected to surpass that of the United States shortly before 2050, at which point it would become the third largest country in the world”.

“In 2050, the populations in six of the 10 largest countries are expected to exceed 300 million: China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and United States of America (in alphabetical order).

Although the African population will remain relatively young for several more decades, the percentage of its population aged 60 or over is expected to rise from five per cent in 2017 to around nine per cent in 2050, and then to nearly 20 per cent by the end of the century.”

The report also noted that the world population, now at least 7.6 billion, was up from 7.4 billion in 2016, adding the concentration of global population growth is in the poorest countries.

NAWA OO! See What Young Women In Tunisia Are Doing Just To Become Virgins Again

As it’s expected for women in Tunisia to be virgins until when are married, young Tunisian women are now having hymen reconstruction surgery to avoid being sent back to their parents after the wedding.

According to BBC, young Tunisian women are turning to hymenoplasty, a short procedure that promises to reconstruct her virginity surgically. The young women save and spend as much as &400 for the procedure to prevent future shame.

One woman who has decided to turn to science to regain her lost virginity is 28-year-old woman Yasmine. Yasmine lost her virginity while living abroad to one man but now is afraid her husband will find out she is not a virgin after they get married.

Though she has agreed to the surgery, she considers this procedure a lie and one day the husband might suspect or find out about the sham.

“I consider this to be deception and I’m really worried,” says Jasmine whose wedding is in two months.
BBC reporter Sihem Hassaini who accompanied Jasmine to the clinic for the procedure was shocked to discover a bunch of other women waiting for the 30-minute procedure to reconstruct their hymen.

Jasmine took months to save for the procedure while keeping every detail secret from her family.

According to Rashid, the doctor to carry out the surgery on Jasmine, most of his young patients are driven by the fear of bringing shame to their family and relatives when discovered they are not virgins.

The doctor said though many doctors refuse to do the surgery, he does it because he disagrees with those who make virginity a sort of sacred thing.

The annoyed doctor said he blamed the male-dominated society that hides in some religious principles.
“I mean it when I say its male dominance and I’ll continue to wage an all-out war against it,” he says.

Tunisia is regarded as a leader in women’s rights in North Africa but religion and tradition here dictate that young women have to remain virgins until they are married.

There is also a provision in Tunisian law for divorce in cases where women are discovered not to be virgins.

World Bank Approves $961m To Support Nigeria’s Economic Recovery Plan (Read Details)

The World Bank on Tuesday approved $961m loan to support the implementation of Nigeria’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan 2017-2020.

A statement made available to our correspondents on Wednesday by the Senior Communications Officer at the World Bank office in Nigeria, Olufunke Olufon, said the fund would go into two programme-for-results operations totalling $961m.

One of the programmes is the Better Education Service Delivery for All, which will receive $611m. The programme aims to bring out-of-school children into the classroom, improve literacy, and strengthen accountability for results in basic education.

In 2013, 13.2 million school-age children were out of school, the overwhelming majority of who were in the North where out-of-school children rates were also higher among girls, in rural areas and form poor families, the bank said.

The second benefitting programme is the Kaduna State Economic Transformation Programme for Results, which will receive $350m credit. It focuses on enhancing private sector investment in Kaduna State through improved business environment, effective budget planning and execution, and fiscal accountability.

According to the bank, Kaduna State has taken a number of reform actions to improve its economic performance and social outcomes, and sustain the efforts.

The World Bank Country Director for Nigeria, Rachid Benmessaoud, was quoted to have said, “Investing in human capital and creating economic opportunities for all are key areas of focus to achieve more inclusive and private-sector led growth.

“These two operations support the government’s economic and growth recovery plan and will help Nigeria achieve sustainable and measurable results.”

The bank added that both operations implemented results-based financing, whereby disbursement of funds was linked to the achievement of tangible and verifiable results.

As a first phase for addressing out-of-school children in Nigeria, the BESDA aims to help enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the federal Universal Basic Education Programme through incentivising results at the state level and thereby reduce the number of out-of-school children by roughly one third by 2022, the bank said.

The Kaduna operation, on the other hand, will support the state’s ambitious reform efforts to increase both private investments for job creation and revenue generation, the bank said, adding that it would also strengthen budget performance and fiscal accountability through citizen engagement.

Checkout The 5 Seriously Annoying Things Nigerians Do After An Accident (No. 4 Is Really Annoying)

Having an accident, fatal or not, is not something that anyone wants to encounter.

Regardless, when it happens, you have to look for ways to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. This said, you expect some sane and normal actions taken by the people at the accident spot.

However, for Nigerians, it is different. They completely do the opposite of what you expect and it can be very annoying.

Naijaloaded shares some of the seriously annoying things some Nigerians do after an accident.

1. Leave their car on the road

When you bashed another person’s car, you find them arguing and exchanging angry words right in the middle of the road. They do not really care if their actions result in a long traffic or notorious queue. Why can’t both of you get off the road and find a solution? In other cases, when a car has an accident, you still find it at that same spot for weeks.

2. Crowd the scene as if they are watching a movie

Imagine an accident scene and people simply gather round shouting, some crying, while others just watch what is happening like a movie. They will not allow the emergency services to work and in some circumstances, the police have to shoot in the air to disperse the crowd.

3. It is an opportunity for some to ‘steal’

In a crowd, you find the good, the bad and the ugly. The mission of certain people is just to steal. They steal phones, wallets, and other valuables. They do not even care if it is the properties of the person involved in the accident. Unfortunate!

4. Taking pictures

The technology age is here. The urge to take selfies and pictures have made some people become uncaring and unconcerned about others. At an accident scene, you find people taking pictures to post on social media just to get likes and comments. Meanwhile, an individual is lying there in a pool of blood.

5. Refuse to help the victims

This is probably the worse of all. You just wring in pain when you see people around you but they refuse to ferry you to the hospital or offer first aid. Sometimes, it is not their fault because the police may just come around and accuse you of something you do not know anything about. Nigerians prefer to wait until the emergency services and police arrive. But at that short time, a precious life may be lost. Let us lend a helping hand.

Nigeria Projected To Become World’s Third Most Populous Country By 2050 (See Details)

Nigeria is projected to be the world’s third most populous country by the year 2050, according to a report released by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

The report, titled ‘World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision’, said with such development, Nigeria would overtake the United States in terms of population just as world population would reach 9.8 billion people.

The report said “by 2050, the third most populous country will be Nigeria, which currently ranks seventh, and which is poised to replace the United States.

“Among the 10 largest countries of the world, one is in Africa (Nigeria).

“Amongst these, Nigeria’s population, currently the seventh largest in the world, is growing the most rapidly.

“Consequently, the population of Nigeria is projected to surpass that of the United States shortly before 2050, at which point it would become the third largest country in the world.

“In 2050, the populations in six of the 10 largest countries are expected to exceed 300 million: China, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and United States of America (in alphabetical order).

“Africa, which has the youngest age distribution of any region, is projected to experience a rapid ageing of its population, the report noted.

“Although the African population will remain relatively young for several more decades, the percentage of its population aged 60 or over is expected to rise from five per cent in 2017 to around nine per cent in 2050, and then to nearly 20 per cent by the end of the century.”

In addition, the birth rates in African countries are likely to “at least double” by 2050, according to the report.

That trend came in spite of lower fertility rates in nearly all regions of the world, including in Africa, where rates fell from 5.1 births per woman up to 2005 to 4.7 births in the five years following.

In terms of other population trends depicted in the report, the population of India, which currently ranks as the second most populous country with 1.3 billion inhabitants, will surpass China’s 1.4 billion citizens, by 2024.

The report noted that the world population, now at least 7.6 billion, was up from 7.4 billion in 2016, adding the concentration of global population growth is in the poorest countries.

The report said in spite of an overall drop in the number of children people have around the globe, the population was spurred by the relatively high levels of fertility in developing countries.

“With roughly 83 million people being added to the world’s population every year, the upward trend in population size is expected to continue, even assuming that fertility levels will continue to decline.

“At this rate, the world population is expected to reach 8.6 billion in 2030, 9.8 billion in 2050 and surpass 11.2 billion in 2100,” the report further revealed.

The growth is expected to come, in part, from the 47 least developed countries, where the fertility rate is around 4.3 births per woman, and whose population is expected to reach 1.9 billion people in 2050 from the current estimate of one billion.

In contrast, the birth rates in Europe are up to 1.6 births per woman, up from 1.4 births in 2000 to 2005.

Do You Use LinkedIn? See The 7 Ways To Build A Strong LinkedIn Profile

Due to the fact that a large number of recruiters are now on LinkedIn, it is important to understand how to properly utilize the site’s resources to help put your best foot forward to these recruiters.

Naijaloaded shares 7 ways to build a strong LinkedIn profile.

1. Your Picture

This goes without saying. To build a strong LinkedIn profile, you need a smart and professional looking picture of yourself. You need a profile picture that presents you in the best professional light and that will allow people easily recognize you. A good picture helps to instill a sense of trust or engagement, especially in the minds of headhunters who browse LinkedIn profiles looking for suitable candidates.

2. Your Headline

You need a good headline to build a strong LinkedIn. Maximize the characters of headline and use them to describe briefly and clearly what you do and who you serve. Try not to just name your job title. For example, rather than just writing ‘Business Development Manager at DIY Corp’, you can write, ‘Business Development Manager at DIY Corp: Essentially identifying and exploiting new business opportunities to bring in revenue’.

3. Your Summary

The LinkedIn algorithm searches for keywords here, so filling this section with information you know your target audience will be looking for can help strengthen your profile. In your summary, be sure to put in keywords or terms that match those that job seekers and business owners in the industry you aim to work in are looking for. This helps to increase your visibility. Also, try to quantify your achievements with percentages and numbers that are safe for external use. For example, ‘I was able to increase business by 80% or by over 5 times what it was before my arrival’ etc. You can also add some media, like video, pictures, scans or screenshots that gives credence to your claims about who you say you are and what you say you can do.

4. Your Experience

Aside the experience from your resume, try to share some relevant media to add credence to your claims (like videos, images, presentations or even articles and article links that you have written or that quote you). Adding some media to your profile, even if it’s one or two, makes your profile more attractive and encourages potential viewers of your profile to stay a little while longer on your page, which can ultimately be good for you.

5. Your Endorsements

Try to get endorsement from your connections for the skills you claim you have. However, be sure not to overdo it with this one. Delete endorsements for skills you don’t have and avoid putting up skills you don’t have in the first place. Reorder your endorsements so the most relevant comes before the least relevant. Try to build up your endorsement numbers for your most important skills by endorsing the skills of others (who will often endorse yours back) and by sending messages to friends, family and other connections to help endorse your skills.

6. Your Contact Information

Be sure your contact information is up-to-date to make it easier for you to be reached. If you don’t want to use your private numbers, be sure to at least use an active email address that you can be reached through.

7. Your Updates

Be sure to regularly update your LinkedIn profile with industry news, accomplishments, job changes etc. This can help to increase your visibility and give your network an opportunity to engage with you.

Wicked: Suspected Criminals Set A Family House Ablaze, Kills Father, Mother & Son In Rivers

Unidentified criminals believed to be cultists has set ablaze a family house at Okpako-Ejemah in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State killing one Alhaji Hamza Garuba, his wife and a step son.

Mr. Muhammed Sani, younger brother to Garuba, narrated to The Nation that the arsonists, five in number invaded his brother’s house at about10.00p.m. Tuesday and attempted to rob the family.

Sani said the bandits had attempted to rape wife of Garuba, but that the deceased who was infuriated stabbed one of the bandits to death.

He said: “I believed the stabbing of that criminal may have infuriated other gang members who quickly ran out of the house, locked the entrance door and set the house ablaze. My brother, his wife and a step son were locked up inside the house while the house was on fire. Nobody was at hand to rescue them as all of them were burnt beyond recognition.”

Muhammed stated that killing was not in connection of the clash between Hausa community and task force team in Onne, Eleme LGA, Monday, adding that Garuba was killed by criminals that invaded his house.

However, the Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, confirmed the incident and added that two persons have been arrested in relation to the matter.

Meantime, Arewa Consultative Forum, South-South, South-East branch, has condemned the killing and worried that mischief makers want to cause disunity among Hausa community and the people of Eleme.

Speaking, the Coordinator of the body, Alhaji Musa Saidu, noted that Garuba was killed by bandits, saying: “The incident at Okpako-Ejemah was a clear case of robbery and arsonist attack. The Young man and his family were killed by arsonist who set their house ablaze. Hausa people have co-habited with their host community and they don’t have any issue.”

Christian & Islamic Religious Knowledge Is Compulsory For All Students – Minister Of Education

The Minister of education, Adamu Adamu has Christian Religious Knowledge (CRK) is compulsory for all Christian students, while Islamic Religious Studies (IRS) is also compulsory for Muslim counterparts said this during a press briefing at the end of the federal executive council meeting presided over by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo.

Adamu said those who want to destabilise the country were behind the claims that the subject had been removed from the school curriculum.

“I read in the papers that they asked the acting president to confirm if the report that CRK had been removed from the curriculum is true,” he said.

“There is no truth in that at all. It was just somebody’s imagination probably somebody who wanted to raise tension in the country after the Biafra issue and then the quit order given by some young people in the north, so the person just followed suit trying to stoke the embers of religion. There is no truth whatsoever in that. I repeat, no truth in it.

“There was a policy in 2012 which was given effect in 2014, that is even before this government came in. One of the things I did as minister was to speak to the national council on education to disarticulate history from the social studies curricula because we believe we want our young people to know our history.

“You cannot know who you are without knowing who your ancestors were in the past. And the national council of education did accept and agreed that the teaching and learning of CRK has been made compulsory for all Christians students and teaching and learning of Islamic studies is compulsory for all Muslim students.

“So you are actually accusing the ministry of the opposite of what it has done? You to be more responsible in handling the issues especially at this time in history.”

Adamu said the council discussed only a single item on the agenda, the roadmap on education sector and developments.

According to him, council members agreed unanimously that the standard of education has fallen and there is a need for a ministerial retreat to urgently address issues militating against the sector.

He disclosed that council members rejected the blueprint presented by the ministry, and argued that the problems in the sector were beyond blueprint.

“Today at council, we discussed many issues but the most important was education. Members agree that the fallen standard in education is so serious that we will need a ministerial retreat to look at all the issues,” he said.

“There are a lot of issues in education and all of them are crying for solution. So, there will be a ministerial retreat in the next two weeks to look at the issues and from there we will take off in what we are doing.

“Initially, we had prepared a blueprint but FEC felt the issues are beyond that because, there are crises in all the areas of education, in out of school children, in technical education and training, in ICT, in all the areas you can think of. So, ministers are going to start talking to themselves and come out with solutions.”
