Pastor Adefarasin’s Church, ‘House On The Rock’ Engulfed In Flames (Watch Video)

A section of the Abuja branch of the “House on the Rock” Church in the Federal Capital Territory was gutted by fire earlier today.

It is understood that a building in the church, which was founded by Pastor Paul Adefarasin, was visibly ablaze while fire fighters were struggling to put out the flames.

Although the flames have now been put out, the extent of the damage incurred by the flames is not known.

This is even as the cause of the fire could not be ascertained.

The incident was also confirmed to pressmen by the pastor of the church, Edbert Abebe, and the commandant of the FCT Command of the fire service, Aderemi Olusola.

They also noted that there were no casualties and that investigation would commence immediately to ascertain the cause of the fire.

“There was nobody in the building, we are not actually meeting in this section of the building; we are meeting in some other section. We will have to carry out investigations to find out what exactly caused the fire but we can’t speculate,” Pastor Abebe said.

Speaking to NAN, a member of the Church said that the main building had not been in use for a while now as renovation work was going on.

Also lending voice on the incident, a twitter user Abayomi Shogunle said that there were 7 fire-fighter trucks at the church premises trying to put out the fire.

Shogunle further supported his claim with a video of the burning church on Twitter.

House on the Rock was founded in December 1994 by Pastor Paul A. Adefarasin in Lagos, Nigeria.

The ministry was established to be a vanguard 21st century Church with a vision of empowering believers for the fulfilment of their God-ordained destinies.

Since its’ inception the Church has grown far beyond the borders of Lagos, with over 40 daughter Churches and missions in Nigeria and across the globe.

Is Osinbajo Right That “Nigeria Is Indissoluble”?

Is Osinbajo Right that “Nigeria Is Indissoluble”?, By Jibrin Ibrahim

CLICK here to read more opinion articles

The acting president, Yemi Osinbajo, on Wednesday, stated categorically that: “Nigeria is indissoluble,” while addressing State sovernors in Abuja. Over the past few weeks, he had been addressing traditional, ethnic, religious and political leaders in a spirited effort to reduce divisive tensions in the country.

This article was written by Jibrin Ibrahim. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of

Recent tensions exploded following the so-called Kaduna Declaration in which a Northern youth coalition asked all Igbos living in Northern Nigeria to leave the region. The Northern group was responding to repeated calls by certain Igbo groups for secession. Other groups have also joined the fray, condemning and threatening others, and creating a climate of the apparent process of dismantling the country.

It is in this context that the acting president has been engaging leaders and appropriately counselling that: “We must not allow careless use of words to degenerate into crisis.” I completely agree with his key message that: “Nigeria’s unity should not be taken for granted” and that we should all beware that reckless words and actions can push us along the path leading to more bloodshed or even to war.

At this time, it is important that our leaders, and indeed all of us, come out and condemn hate speech, divisiveness, and above all the politics of brinkmanship. The fact of the matter is that there is no country in the world that does not face the risk of break-up and decomposition. Anthropologists tell us that the Somali are the most pure “tribe” in the world, all of whom are descendants of one line, and yet it is one of the most divided nations in the world today. What we know from history is that nations survive not because they are composed of the same group but because they create conditions that favour staying together.

Nigeria is confronting a number of critical political challenges that are raising serious questions about its identity and survival as a democratic federal republic. First, there has been a significant rise and expansion of sectarian conflicts, both ethnic and religious. The sustained crisis provoked by the Boko Haram insurgency has also been particularly unsettling for the country. The phenomenon of rural banditry related to cattle rustling and violent conflicts between pastoralists and farmers have virtually ended the “Pax Nigeria” established by the British between 1903 and 1915 in rural Nigeria. Increasingly, people are feeling threatened about killings in their homelands.

As rural peace recedes, the federal character politics in the country has been used to discriminate against millions of citizens labelled as settlers in most parts of the country. Violence has repeatedly been the outcome of conflicts between “settlers” and “indigenes” in various parts of the country. As more Nigerians live in areas where they are not considered indigenes, the feeling of exclusion is spreading. Following the 2015 general election, the insurgency in the oil producing Niger Delta has returned and sabotage of oil facilities has escalated. The revival of Biafran secessionism also took its élan within the context of all these political challenges.

Nonetheless, we should not panic too much about current political developments. Nigeria was amalgamated into a single political community in 1914 for economic, not political, reasons. That act of 1914 had limited objectives – the amalgamation of administration and finance to enable the system balance the books. In 1939, regional autonomy was reinforced with the division of the country into three regions. Since then, Nigerian politics has had a very strong ethno-regional character and the political elites have always sought to exploit it for their political ends. At every point when the political classes felt their interests were at stake, they have not hesitated to play the trump card of secession.

It should be recalled that in the 1950s, virtually all Nigerian parties saw themselves as political expressions of ethno-regional associations with the Action Group (AG) in the West evolving from a Yoruba cultural association – Egbe Omo Oduduwa, the Northern Peoples’ Congress (NPC) emerging from the northern cultural association, Jamiyar Mutanen Arewa and the National Congress of Nigerian Citizens (NCNC) which started as a national party but later narrowed its social base to a cultural association – the Igbo State Union.

These ethno-regional elite blocs struggled against each other in seeking to configure federalism to their advantage, often using the secession threat. It was the Sardauna of Sokoto who first referred to the amalgamation of the Nigerian provinces as “the mistake of 1914”.

That was in the early 1950s, when he flagged the secession banner, because he felt that Southern politicians were unwilling to understand the attitudes of the Northern elite towards independence. The Sardauna’s position was that the Northern elite would not rush towards independence if it meant replacing European domination with Southern domination.

In the 1950 Ibadan Constitutional Conference to review the Richards Constitution, a representational ratio of 45:33:33 for the North, West and East was proposed. Northern politicians felt threatened by this arrangement and the then Emir of Zaria articulated their position clearly – the North must have 50 percent of the seats or secede from the country. In May 1953, after Northern politicians had been ridiculed in Lagos for opposing the AG motion for self-government in 1956, the Northern House of Assembly and the Northern House of Chiefs met and passed an eight-point resolution that amounted to a call for confederation and separation.

In the 1954 Lagos Constitutional Conference, it was the turn of the AG to demand that a secession clause be inserted in the Constitution. The move was opposed by the NPC and NCNC. In 1964, following the census and election crises, Southern politicians were getting disenchanted with their future in Nigeria. Michael Okpara, the premier of the Eastern Region directly threatened in December 1964 that the East would secede. Okpara went ahead to establish a committee under his Attorney General to work out the modalities for a declaration of secession by Eastern Nigeria. When Ojukwu finally decided to embark on the course of secession three years later, he had a ready-made plan waiting for him.The transition from threats to an actual attempt at secession first emerged from the Niger Delta.

On February 23, 1966, Isaac Boro decided that he was not ready to live in a Nigeria that was ruled by Igbos. He therefore declared the Independence of the Niger Delta Peoples’ Republic following the first coup and the establishment of the Ironsi regime. Boro had become very disturbed about perceived Igbo domination of Eastern minorities since his days as a student activist at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. His Republic lasted for only twelve days, the time it took the police to round up his rag-tag army of 159 volunteers. Isaac Boro and two of his colleagues were charged for treason in March and condemned to death in June 1966. Boro was eventually released at the onset of the Nigerian civil war, when he joined the federal side and was killed in battle in 1968, fighting for the liberation of Rivers State from Biafra, on the platform of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The civil war of 1967 to 1970 was, of course, the most serious threat to the existence of Nigeria as a country and it led to the loss of over a million lives. In my view, the present problems confronting the polity are to some extent less intense than the crisis engendered by the census, elections and coup d’états of the 1960s.

The second most intense period of political crisis followed the annulation of the June 12th, 1993 elections and the determination of the Abacha dictatorship to continue in power as the sole candidate for the five “leprous” political parties. To address the concerns, General Abacha had announced in his 1995 independence address the introduction of a modified presidential system in which six key executive and legislative offices will be zoned and rotated between six identifiable geographical groupings; North-West, North-East, Middle-Belt, South-West, East-Central and Southern-Minority. Abacha died and the transition led to the emergence of the Fourth Republic.

The reality of Nigerian politics is that fears of domination of one zone over the others played a central role in convincing politicians of the necessity of a federal solution. The First Republic, which operated essentially as an equilibrium of regional tyrannies, was however characterised by the domination of each region by a majority ethnic group and the repression of regional minorities. Indeed, the central problem that has been generating the steady rise of ethno-regional tensions and conflicts has been the supplanting of Nigeria’s federal tradition by a virtual Jacobin unitary state that emerged under a long period of military rule. Its for this reason that I believe we should continue the tradition of the search for restructuring. Following that path might reveal a surprising outcome – that we have actually been restructuring since 1914 and that process rather than structure might be our problem.

Alonso: Arbeloa Offers Unconditional Friendship

Xabi Alonso has wished his former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Spain teammate, Alvaro Arbeloa well after he announced he would be retiring.

The 34-year-old made over 200 appearances for both Madrid and Liverpool, before playing one year for West Ham.

Arbeloa’s decision to retire has been met with wild praise from former teammates and also Jose Mourinho.

“He arrived at Liverpool silently, away from the noise of the leading role,” Alonso said.

“He won the shirt through his fight and loyalty. We all remember his match [against Barcelona] in the Nou Camp in the Champions League in 2007.

“That day he became the player that all coaches want to have.

“Since our years in Liverpool and later in Madrid, we became inseparable, because Alvaro offers you his unconditional friendship.

“He never cared what they say, but he has always been faithful to his convictions. He has never hesitated to defend what he believes and that is why I admire him so much.

“Now a new stage is opening in his life, but with his head.

“For all these things I will always love you on my team. Both professionally as in life.”

Eid-El-Fitri Tragedy! 148 Feared Dead As “Overturned” Oil Tanker Explodes In Pakistan

No less than 148 persons have been feared dead with another 130 injured on Sunday morning after an overturned oil tanker caught fire in eastern Pakistan.

It is understood that the tragedy at the Ahmad Sharqia area of Bahawalpur in Pakistan on Sunday morning occurred as a crowd attempted to scoop fuel from the tanker after it overturned.

Local news channels showed black smoke billowing skyward and horrific images of scores of burned bodies, as well as rescue officials speeding the injured to hospital and army helicopters ferrying the wounded.

According to a police official, the explosion came as villagers began to gather around the truck in an attempt to collect oil in containers.

The blast has left at least 130 people injured and a state of emergency has been declared in the city, Punjab government spokesman Salman Sufi said.

Bahawalpur’s Victoria Hospital was treating 40 of the injured, all of whom have suffered 70% burns, said Pakistan’s The Nation newspaper

Also, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the media wing of Pakistan’s military, said a total of 51 people with serious burns and in critical condition have been transported by army helicopters to the city of Multan.

It added that the road had been reopened and that traffic had begun to flow again.

The death toll could rise further as another 50 people are still in critical condition, said Dr Mohammad Baqar, a senior rescue official in the area.

Meanwhile, in the immediate aftermath of the incident, Pakistan Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif “expressed deep grief over the heavy loss of life.”

“The Prime Minister has directed provincial government to provide full medical assistance to the injured with burns,” a statement from the Prime Minister’s office said.

“The Prime Minister has expressed sympathies with the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls.”

The Chief Minister of Punjab Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has said an inquiry would be held into the incident.

Also, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa ordered the army to assist the civil administration in the rescue efforts.

“COAS expresses grief on losses in oil tanker incident,” Director General of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major Gen Asif Ghafoor said in a tweet.

Barcelona Interested In Signing Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez

Barcelona are keen to sign Atletico Madrid playmaker Saul Niguez if they fail to land Marco Verratti from Paris Saint Germain, according to AS.

The piece noted that Barca have been keeping an eye on the development of Saul, and the club will send someone to run the rule over him during Spain’s clash with Italy in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship this week.

Barcelona “feel the midfielder has the ideal profile to reinforce their side in the middle of the park, and so are reactivating the interest they’ve had in the player for the past two years.”

At Atletico, Saul has established himself as one of the most effective midfield players in Spanish football. On the ball, he’s excellent, off it, he’s tenacious, and the 22-year-old is intelligent enough to flourish in a variety of different positions.

All You Need To Know Before Buying A Ticket To Watch Wonder Woman

The craze for the wonder woman movie is everywhere and it is for good reasons too as it has set itself apart from the numerous superhero movies available. The movie is unique in the sense that between both Marvel and DC Comics, wonder woman is the first superhero movie that would be led by a woman.
Diana, the Amazon princess comes to the screen with much more than a pretty face, sword, and shield, but also with loads of baggage. The titular role of Diana is played by Gal Gadot who hasn’t played more than a supporting role in the Fast and Furious franchise delivers so much that the movie has earned $500 million dollars so far at the box office.
The good news is that Wonder Woman can be described as the best movie to come out of the DC Comics universe but doesn’t square out much against its Marvel rivals such as Captain America and Doctor Strange. With that being said, Wonder Woman does have its moments by providing an exhilarating aesthetic that keeps viewers on the edge.
Nonetheless, the movie is a little compromising as less emphasis is placed on telling the love story of the hero and more on the love story of the Amazon princess. This places some sort of misery on our heroine, despite her attempt to bring a different flavour to superhero movies.

The Beginning
The movie begins from the all female paradise island, Themyscira, deep in the Amazon forest led by Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielson) and her expert warrior sister General Antiope (Robin Wright). The island is made up of peaceful citizens that are highly skilled in armed combat. The peace was thrown into turmoil with the visit of American spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine), who accidentally penetrates their world, bringing with him fleets of German ships with guns and destruction.

Gal Gadot’s Diana
The Princess of the Island, Diana (Gal Gadot), is soon forced into action by the tales of the war told to her by the American spy and soon leaves her family and the island behind in hopes that she can all on her own bring peace to a world in turmoil. Steve Trevor is some sort of hero, (a mortal and incredibly brave fellow) and the love interest of the Princess, even as she battles with her innocence in a strange land she has little or no understanding of.
It won’t be harsh to say wonder woman seems more like a fairy tale movie than a superhero movie. Gal Gadot is beautiful and handles are action scenes like a professional, even though her role lacks a lot of humour that is expected of such an hard-line superhero. Gal Gadot’s character would have made more sense if she were funny, arrogant and brash rather than refined a sophisticated. Agreed that the latter attributes are expected of a princess, but a line like “Only love can save the world” seems to make her character look more like a Disney Princess.

The End Of The Movie
Chris Pine’s Steve Trevor does an excellent job at making himself look acceptable as a hero. The end of the movie is regaled with computer generated imaging (CGI) that makes Trevor’s day-saving look a little less heroic.
As expected, the villains in this superhero movie like most are very much below par. Elena Anaya tries a lot in her role as the German scientist that tries to mess things up with chemical warfare but could have done much better if she had more things to say and a back story of her own.

Is It Worth Your Time?
Wonder Woman is decent enough but doesn’t offer much as an addition to the superhero genre. The movie is only a step ahead of its DC movie pairs and does little more to keep viewers interested. Gal Gadot’s character is decent and exciting but more time should have been given to Hippolyta and Antiope. I all you’d probably enjoy the movie but not one you would want to go back and watch again and again.

Sven Goran Eriksson Wants Wayne Rooney In China

Former England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has opened up on life in China, and has insisted that Wayne Rooney “would have a positive experience” if he decided to move to the Chinese Super League this summer.

Wayne Rooney, 31, is widely expected to leave Manchester United ahead of the 2017-18 season after struggling for first-team football last term.

Rooney has been urged to move to the United States to continue his career by former England teammate Frank Lampard, but Rooney’s former international boss has now talked-up the potential of the Chinese Super League.

Eriksson has spent the last four years in Chinese football with Shanghai SIPG and Guangzhou R&F, although he recently left League One side Shenzhen FC after just six months at the helm.

“I hear a lot that China is not a good place to live for foreign people but that could not be further from the truth. I never had a problem. Of course it is not the same as Europe and the culture is very different. But if you live in Shanghai, it is like living in London,” Eriksson told reporters.

“If you want to eat Italian, Japanese or Spanish food then there are a lot of restaurants like that and you have everything you need. You don’t feel cut off at all, I certainly didn’t and none of the foreign players I had with me felt that way either. I lived in Guangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen and they were fantastic cities. I don’t think any foreigner had difficulties with the Chinese way of living in the big cities while I was there.

“I haven’t spoken to Rooney for a long time, so I don’t know what he is thinking, but if he went to China I think he would have a positive experience. He has a young family but there are international schools in the big cities and I know for sure he would have every help possible to make him settle. He would be made very welcome.

“The only problem you have is the language. But if you live in Shanghai or Beijing you have a lot of foreign people, so it is less of an issue. I bumped into many Swedish people in Shanghai and many Europeans live there, working for big companies. And, don’t forget, the players get treated well.”

Jose Mourinho Wants £100m Harry Kane Instead Of Cristiano Ronaldo

Jose Mourinho wants his Manchester United bosses to ignore Cristiano Ronaldo and get £100m Tottenham star Harry Kane, reports the Sunday Mirror.

Mourinho is understood to favour a move for Harry Kane rather than bringing Ronaldo back to Old Trafford eight years after he left for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo vowed to quit Spain after being accused of tax evasion but now it appears he could be staying at the Bernabeu.

And, as a result, Mourinho has reportedly instructed the United hierarchy to use the money assigned for Ronaldo to lure Kane to Old Trafford.

For the second successive season, Kane finished up with the Premier League’s Golden Boot but a move for the 23-year-old would be problematic for United.

The striker only signed a new contract in December which keeps him at Spurs until 2022, and the club could therefore command a fee in excess of £100 million.

Why Fast And Furious 8: The Fate Of The Furious Is Not Worth The Hype

The Fast and furious franchise has held action movie lovers spellbound for 10 years and it doesn’t seem they are about to stop. However, since the 5th installment was released in 2011, it appears the franchise has deviated from its origins in street racing towards the heist genre. This appears to have worked and helped the 6th and 7th instalment break the box office records, even as the 8th aims to continue the trend. And it’s worked.

Irrespective of the plot, wish a lot of the time defies human logic and contains a healthy dose of fun, viewers are not in the least bothered provided the action sequences provides the wow moment that made them sit through 8 parts of the movie. Chris Morgan makes his way to the production for his sixth written part, just as F. Gary Gray, sits on the directors chair. The story follows the 7th instalment where Dom (Vin Diesel) and Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) are on a honeymoon in Cuba, and their fun gets interrupted, when hacker villain Cipher (Charlize Theron) ambushes Dom and black mails him to do her bidding.
Nice plot isn’t it? But why is Fast and Furious 8: The Fate of the Furious not worth the hype? Here’s why we think so.
Warning! Spoiler alerts about certain action scenes.

The Villain Appears Weak

Cipher fast and furious 8
This doesn’t appear to be the fault of Charlize Theron but her relegation to the sky for most of the movie and the fact that she never gets to come face-to-face with the crew, except for Dom, makes an uncomfortable watch. rest of the diverse crew. The movie fails to give the Villain Cipher, any hands-on action which affects the whole setup of the movie.

The Movie Is Too Serious

Fast and furious 8
One reason people have loved the franchise is that it follows the typical dumb action movie blockbusters line and The Fate of the Furious seems to deviate. The movie follows a serious plot (which has been done before) but fails to have fun along the way making it bland, lacking colour and energy. The humour and wise-cracks the movie has been known for is absent for most of the film, making it more serious than viewers wish for.

The Cast Seems Smaller
While this may sound funny, given the numbers of characters that appear, we can’t help to notice the absence of Gisele (Gal Gadot) and Han (Sung Kang) left at the end of Fast & Furious 6 to maintain continuity, and Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) left after Furious 7, due to the death of Walker in a car accident. These actors brought depth and dynamism to the group which is noticeably absent now.
The Fate of the Furious further divides this small cast by pitting everyone else against Dom which is made even more terrible when he seeks help from outside, instead of asking his loyal gang that he calls family for help.
Fast and Furious was fun because it was about the while team and the fact that the 8th instalment took that away creates heavy drama which inhibits the free-flow of the movie.

The Fast Cars Has Lost Its Thrills

Fast and furious 8 cars
The movie opens with a race between Dom, and his cousin’s Cuban enemy, with both racers using two very opposite cars; one that has seen better days and the other, a modern one. The scene finishes with Dom reversing over the finish line to earn a narrow victory which is something the franchise always aspires for.
However, the crazy action sequences the franchise is known for doesn’t come till almost midway in the movie and for a movie that runs for 2 hours and 16 minutes, that’s a pretty long time to wait for. A scene worthy of mention is when Cipher (Charlize Theron) – the film’s hacker villain – hijacks the city’s car through zero-day exploits on the software end, turning them into self-driving bots for her own use, followed up with a scene where lots of cars exit a high-storey garage and fall onto the cars below making for great carnage.
The self-driving cars didn’t catch much attention as much as Dom and Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) driving those fast cars which was what happened when the gang literally latches onto Dom’s car to stop him. The most unbelievable scene should be when Hobbs tells Roman (Tyrese Gibson) to take the wheel as he gets out of his car, and pushes away a torpedo! Utterly ridiculous, but that’s the kind of action the audience craves for which is few and far between in Fast and Furious 8.

Should You Watch Fast and Furious 8?
Why not? Even though you may have difficulty sitting through the whole of it. Die-hard fans of the franchise probably don’t care for the mistakes but it’s still worthy of mention that the 8th instalment lacks colour, flavour and the sentiments that have made it one of the most successful movie franchise ever made. It is our hope that the next two entries scheduled for release in 2019, and 2021 will do enough to get back on course and find the groove that made us all fall in love with it.
