‘My Elders Support The Igbo Quit Notice’ – Northern Youth Leader, Yerima Replies Falana

Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN) has been accused by the Co-Convener of the Coalition of Northern Groups and leader of Arewa Consultative Youth Forum, Shettima Yerima, of living in the past, following Falana’s statement he should not be taken seriously, PUNCH reports.

Falana had on Thursday, June 22, at a news conference in Abuja described Yerima as a “Lagos man.”

“The man who gave quit notice (to Igbo living in the North) does not live in the North. He lives in Lagos. I am saying this: Shettima Yerima lives in Lagos. He is a Lagos man. So, to live in Lagos and be giving quit notice is not the answer,” he had said.

Reacting to the human rights lawyer’s statement on Friday night, Yerima said that Falana was only seeking cheap publicity.

“The Shettima Falana knows in Lagos is not the same person in the North. I challenge him to come to Kaduna and ask about who I am. And I challenge him to go to Ekiti to contest a local government seat. I am for and with the North. I am not a coward. I am protecting the interests of my people and I get support from my elders. Falana is living in the past. I spend more time in the North than in Lagos.

‘The Hausa Leader Who Gave Igbo Quit Notice Resides In Lagos’ – Femi Falana

“And, when did it become a crime that a northerner cannot issue a statement in the North though he stays in Lagos? I am a Nigerian. Shouldn’t Falana be castigating the man who said he hates Nigerians and doesn’t want his people to remain a part of Nigeria? I am in touch with my people. I have followers; does Falana have supporters? How many times has he contested elections in Ekiti State and lost? Despite his level of intelligence he hasn’t won an election in his state. Leading your people is not about propaganda and noise-making; it is about facing reality.”

The activist added that he had the support of northern elders in issuing a quit notice to the Igbo living in the North, noting that it is not a threat.

Urging Falana to focus more on the main issue, Yerima said, “As I speak to you now I am in Kaduna. Is there a law that says being a Nigerian I cannot do so? While he’s busy pursuing personal interests, I am defending my people against the insults and blackmail of one Igbo called Nnamdi Kanu and his co-travellers. What has Falana done about the insults IPOB heaped on the Yoruba? He is seeking cheap publicity.

Presidency Releases Buhari’s Voice Message To Dismiss Reports On Speech Impairment

“I challenge him to come and see how I am living as a king in Kaduna – I am being celebrated. I am here to defend the integrity of my people. Does he consider Nnamdi Kanu a foreigner – someone who has lived for many years abroad? I have my roots in Zaria and I go home regularly. When last did Falana visit his home in Ekiti?”

Owerri Bank Robbery: Protesters Storm Police Headquarters, Demand Increase Of Officers’ Salaries, Welfare Packages

Protesters stormed the Imo State Police headquarters to demand the immediate review and increase of the salaries and welfare packages of police officers, bringing vehicular and human movement to a temporary halt in Owerri.

The protesters displayed various placards with inscriptions such as ‘We demand immediate review and increase of our police officers’ salaries’, ‘Nigerian police deserve the best’, ‘Federal Government, stop paying police officers pittance as salaries’, and ‘Without police there will be anarchy in Nigeria’.

They marched through various streets in the state capital before arriving the police headquarters where they sang songs and demanded to see the State Commissioner of Police.

Owerri Zenith Bank Robbery: ‘Our 5-Year-Old Son Slumped, Died At His Burial’ – Wife Of Gallant Officer Opens Up

The demonstration was on the auspices of Genius Eyes International Foundation for the Hopeless.

They addressed a letter to the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, through the commissioner of police in the state, Chris Ezike.

Spokesperson for the protesters, Mr. Paulcy Iwuala, said the story of the family of Chukwudi Iboko, who died as a result of the gunshot injuries he sustained during the February 22, 2017, Zenith Bank robbery, prompted the demonstration.

Iwuala said, “I visited the wife of Sergeant Chukwudi Iboko after I read in The PUNCH Newspapers the pitiable condition of the family he left behind.

“I visited the family, interacted with the widow and her seven surviving children and our Foundation came to a conclusion that the police officers in Nigeria deserve more than they are getting as salaries and allowances from the Federal Government presently.”

He said that since the police officers themselves could not protest, the foundation had decided to embark on the protest on their behalf.

“The newspaper, which reported that an Inspector in Nigeria Police Force does not earn up to N700,000 as a monthly salary angered us. How can you expect the best from the police officers when they are poorly paid and treated? The police officers are under stress. They are going through a lot.

“We Nigerians seek a review of the salary structure and other welfare packages for the police officers, for it is said that a hungry man is an angry man.

“It is high time we started treating our police officers well so that people can be encouraged to join the force. It is known all over that the composition of the Nigeria Police Force is far below average, porous and highly inadequate,” Iwuala lamented.

Reacting after receiving the letter on behalf of the IGP, the CP urged the protesters to work towards making sure that the bill on Police Trust Fund, which was before the National Assembly, was quickly passed into law.

Assuring the protesters that he would deliver their petition to the IGP, Ezike asserted that beyond the police Trust Fund, the police hierarchy and the Federal Government were working hard to make sure that the police were provided with the logistics they needed to effectively carry out their assignments.

‘Nigeria Is Not Worth Dying For’ – Policemen Speak On Owerri Bank Robbery

Ezike said, “While I promise to deliver your protest letter to the Inspect General of Police, I implore you to join my command in flushing out cultism, kidnapping and armed robbery in Imo State.

“Cultism is the mother of all crimes; as youths, help the police with local intelligence and information to make our society better.”

‘I Am God’s Number Four After Jesus Christ And The Holy Spirit’ – Zimbabwean Prophet Claims

A Zimbabwean Prophet, Talent Madungwe, claims God has appointed him his Special Adviser and fourth in command, adding that he meets with the almighty on a regular basis to make decisions on how the world should be governed.

According to iHarare, the controversial prophet told his congregation that he is God’s number four after Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit because he is the most righteous person in his country where only 60 people will go to heaven.

The self-proclaimed God’s advisor also claimed that even Angel Michael and Angel Gabriel come after him on the righteousness scale as he and God are the best of friends.

Prophet Madungwe was quoted as telling his members that he was with God recently where they had a very long discussion on what will happen to the world and when asked to show a proof of the meeting by way of photographs, he was said to have replied that it was not possible to have pictures with God.

Ghanaian Bishop Dedicates Baby Of Teenage Couple He Flogged For Having Sex Out Of Wedlock

“You can’t have pictures of God, the cameras will not function. He came to me in physical form on April 30, 2017. Only 60 people are righteous in this country and among those, only a few of the popular prophets are among the list.

I cannot reveal the names I came fourth because I performed better than the others. Performance is judged monthly. In April, I saw God and he ordained me to be his advisor; He told me when the world will come to an end.

God told me that if all people repent, the world will come to an end in 300 years but if not, then it will be 100 years. I will have a meeting with Him and tell him if people are repenting because he has put me in charge of advising Him on matters concerning the world. This will be in five years.”

Madungwe who claims to have had meetings with God over 20 times this year alone, also described Heaven look like, adding that the earth is the photocopy of heaven with the only difference being that heaven is built with gold.

‘How Evans’ Gang Kidnapped, Murdered My Father After Collecting N15m Ransom’ – Ex-Super Eagles’ Player

Billionaire kidnapper, Chukwudubem Onwuamadike, a.k.a. Evans abducted and murdered Pa James Iloenyosi, father of ex-Super-Eagles’ defender, Chikelue Iloenyosi, after collecting N15m ransom, PUNCH reports.

Chikelue, who played professional football in France and Turkey, described his family’s encounter with Evans and his gang as a lengthy hide-and-seek game.

He said one early morning on November 25, 2013, his father who was 86 at the time, was on his way back from their local Catholic church when three SUVs double-crossed him and whisked him away.

According to the football star, that fateful day was the last time he would ever see his father alive again.

In the words of the Chikelue, who is actress Stephanie Okereke-Linus’ ex-husband;

“When they took him away, they did not talk to us until after five days. They phoned my twin sister. She was sobbing when she called me that the kidnappers had made contact.

“When we, the children, gathered, my sister called the kidnappers again and they simply told us that they would call back. They did not call back until after another five days just to build our anxiety.”

According to Chikelue, the kidnappers on the morning of the fifth day called to demand a ransom of N50m.

The routine of begging and pleading for the reduction of the ransom started at this point and after many days, they eventually reduced the ransom to N15m.

Why Billionaire Kidnapper, Evans May Not Face The Death Penalty Despite Anti-Kidnapping Law

Chikelue said, “When we paid the N15m, my father was already dead and we did not know.

“What made me upset was that despite how seriously we worked to get him back, my father did not come out of it alive.”

But upon payment of the ransom, the kidnappers said they were not releasing their victim until the family brought more money. But they never heard from the kidnappers again.

However, after four months of investigation into the kidnap, said to have involved hundreds of policemen in Anambra State combing the forest at the time, security agencies got a break when a member of the gang that kidnapped Chikelue’s father, a suspect known as Nonso, was arrested along with three other members of his gang.

Chikelue said at the time, Evans was already a popular criminal well known to the State Anti-Robbery Squad of the Anambra State Police Command.

He was said to be a wanted robber known for hitting bullion vans.

“The SARS boss in Anambra told me at the time that any suspect arrested for any major crime always mentioned the name of Evans,” he said.

According to him, the family had to involve a private investigator in the case at a point when there was no longer news about their father’s whereabouts months after the family paid the ransom.

In addition to this, he said a friend of his based in Israel helped to track his father’s line and traced it to a young lady, who said Nonso was his boyfriend.

List Of Victims Of Nigeria’s ‘Richest, Most Notorious Kidnapper’ And The Ransoms He Collected

“When we arrested the girl, she said Nonso only gave her the phone for safe-keeping, instructing her not to put it on. We started tracking Nonso. At a point, the current leader of the IRT, Abba Kyari, gave us 18 of his men to follow us to Cotonou, Benin Republic because our trace on Nonso’s line showed he was there.

“We got there and the police arrested a young man, who said he came to buy a car. He said the number was not his and that he only wanted to use it to call somebody in Nigeria. The police had to let him go when it was clear he knew nothing.

“Later, we left the Cotonou guy. Again, our private tracker traced him to Lokoja, Kogi State, ” he said.

According to him, he and other members of the gang were said to have relocated there immediately they shared the ransom because many security agencies were after the gang.

Chikelue said after identifying the hotel the suspect might be hiding in, some members of the SARS team in Kogi State moved in to make the arrest.

He said, “I was in Lokoja for two months with a private tracker before we arrested Nonso.

“When we got to the hotel with the police that day, we requested for the list of the people staying at the hotel. The hotel staff mentioned a “small boy” with his girlfriend in one of the rooms.

“We knocked on the door and the girlfriend came out. He said her boyfriend was in the bathroom. But I was hearing a sound inside. He was trying to escape through the window but SARS operatives were already stationed around the hotel.

“He eventually came out and said his name was Emmanuel. But I knew it was him right away because we had been able to obtain his photograph ahead.

“But because I did not want him to panic, I pretended it was not him and told the SARS operatives in his presence that the person we were looking for was an older man.

“He relaxed and was going inside when I called him and said I wanted to ask him something. I dialled his phone number there and then when it rang, we took it and it showed the name ‘Kidnapper football’. The SARS operatives immediately pounced on him and handcuffed him.

“I asked Nonso if he knew me, he said he did not. I told him I was the footballer whose number he saved with that name. He then asked if I was ‘General’ – my alias – and I said yes.”

“When Nonso was arrested, he became submissive, and pleaded for his life; saying he would provide any information the police needed.

“He immediately told us that his leader was Evans. But he said there was no way we could get Evans because he had fled to Lagos after the completion of the operation. At this point, Nonso kept our hope alive. He said my father was still alive. He refused to give precise information,” Chikelue said

The ex-footballer added that he was very hopeful at that point and believed he was indeed going to get his father back alive.

Nonso, who was transported back to Anambra in the company of SARS operatives later provided the police with Evans’ phone line, with which they started tracking him.

When the police team got to Anambra with the suspect, he reportedly began to plead not to be taken to SARS headquarters in the state for fear of being tortured and killed. He said he was willing to give up all the necessary information.

Nonso told the police that Evans was always on the move after each operation.

Chikelue said, “We were calling Evans to pinpoint his location but it was all abortive. Nonso was later made to call another member of the gang called Awolowo to inform him that there was an operation.

“But Awolowo said he did not want to do any operation at the time because his wife had just put to bed. Nonso said Awolowo was part of Evans’ Asaba, Delta State group.”

The police later arrested Awolowo and two others.

For many days, these suspects were said to have kept mum.

It was learnt that they refused to divulge any information about Evans, which the police suspected was owing to the fact that they had taken an oath.

In fact, one of the suspects, who was on the verge of confessing was said to have suddenly started acting like someone with a mental illness.

Even Nonso’s girlfriend who was also arrested was said to have refused to give any information that could implicate her boyfriend.

“The most shocking thing was that when the police interrogated Nonso, he said that if the SARS ever wanted peace in Anambra, they should kill the lady. He said she was the one responsible for taking care of the gang and that she helped them buy drugs and collected ransom on their behalf,” Chikelue said.

But he said while all these were going on, his only concern was knowing his father’s whereabouts.

One day, while Chikelue was at the SARS office, he found a sudden ally in an armed robbery suspect called Onyeso, who was detained there.

Chikelue said, “He pulled me aside and said, ‘My brother, you are a good man because you always give money so that the police could buy us food when you come here’. He said he wanted to give me a privileged information.

“He said if we wanted any result, we should take Awolowo to the backyard and tell the police to shoot their gun in the air as if they had killed him. He said the other one would start confessing because they had indeed taken an oath.

“When the police did this, Nonso started confessing when he was told Awolowo had been killed. He said he would take us to where my father was buried.

‘Why We Are Yet To Arrest Northern Youths That Issued Ndigbo Quit Notice’ – Police Spokesperson

“We journeyed into the forest for three and half hours before we got to where they buried him. I broke down and my sister who was there at the time fainted.”

It was gathered that the late Pa Iloenyosi was buried around Nneyi village in Umueri community.

But most heartbreaking was the information that the old man might have been starved or beaten to death.

When Nonso was asked how the old man died, he explained that it was the fault of those manning the hideout where Evans kept the man.

Pa Iloenyosi was said to have been stripped to his underwear, kept in a cold room and beaten regularly in order to put more pressure on his children.

Chikelue said, “While we were negotiating for ransom, they would call and put the phone on speaker so I could hear how they beat him. My father would cry and beg me to find a way to ensure his freedom.

“We reburied him in at our hometown – Abagana in Anambra state – a few days after we found his body and started the search for Evans. One of the vital information Nonso gave us was that they were on their way to a robbery when they got information about my father and they diverted to Abagana to kidnap him.

So, I was really particular about the arrest of Evans so that he could tell us who in our community gave them the information.”

Chikelue said he was the happiest man in the world the day he heard Evans had been arrested. But he said he was particularly upset when he read that Evans was begging for his life with the excuse that he had never killed a victim before.

“What Evans did to my family was the most painful thing anybody can experience. When I read he has been begging for sympathy, I just laughed. The death penalty for people like him is the only solution. Evans can never repent despite all the second chance he is begging for

Corruption: ‘Our Pastors Don’t Speak The Truth Because They Care About Worldly Possessions’ – Yomi Fash Lanso

Yoruba actor, Yomi Fash Lanso has expressed his amazement at the way Nigerian pastors have not been talking about the affairs of the nation and also attacked their lifestyles.

Our pastors go about with armed personnel and I ask myself a question, who wants to kill or kidnap a pastor? Is he not a man of God? They know that what they are doing is not good, if not they would not move about with armed personnel. If you are truthful to God’s calling, who would want to kidnap you? If you don’t have the notion to harm anyone, then you do not need armed personnel. I was conferred as a deacon in my church a few years back but it would not stop me from talking.

‘Nigeria Remains The Same Because Criminals Like Evans Go Unpunished’ – Ali Baba

If they go around with armed personnel because of the wealth they seem to have, how did they come about the wealth? Is it not from our tithe and offering? They cannot try it in America. A pastor in South Africa is rotting in jail because he molested underage girls. I am sure that if it was in Nigeria, we would not hear anything. Nothing would happen because we have built our society around people and not laws. It is wrong. Nathan in the bible went to King David to convey God’s message without any fear or compromise but our pastors can’t do so. We are in this mess in Nigeria because our pastors are not talking. If we are going to count the true men of God in Nigeria, they would not be up to two among the thousands that we have. Only a few of them can look in the eye of corrupt men in government and speak the truth because they would not want to lose their worldly possession. They know all the rogues we have in government, the people that are putting us in total blackness. These people attend their churches but they are not talking to them which means that these pastors are thieves and rogues as well. Until we start speaking the truth from the church, we are not going to make any head way in Nigeria,” he concluded.

Dino Melaye Drags INEC To Court Over Recall Process

Dino Melaye representing Kogi West Senatorial district has filed an application at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court to stop the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from making a move to recall him.

In an originating summons filed at the court, Melaye said the process undertaking by his constituents was unconstitutional because it is malicious and fraudulent.

A few copies of the 34-page court filings surfaced on many social media platforms late Friday, including two copies on Mr. Melaye’s personal Twitter account.

The emergency court process, with suit number: FHC/ABJ/CS/567/2017, was filed by Mr. Melaye’s lawyers at Mike Ozekhome Chambers in Abuja.

‘I Am Yet To Receive Anything From INEC’ – Melaye Reacts To Recall Process Against Him

The lawmaker prayed the court to grant an urgent injunction prohibiting the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, from going ahead with his recall as authorised by Section 69 of the Constitution.
He said the signatures collated by those seeking his recall were fictitious as they allegedly contained those of dead people, and, as such, any action taken by INEC over the exercise should be voided.
In an unprecedented exercise, voters in Kogi West Senatorial District signed a petition for Mr. Melaye’s recall on June 10.

‘Why We Are Yet To Arrest Northern Youths That Issued Ndigbo Quit Notice’ – Police Spokesperson

Following the quit notice issued Ndigbo residing in the 19 Northern states by a coalition of Northern youths and the rising cases of kidnapping in the country, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Police Force, Jimoh Moshood in a chat with PUNCH explained why the force is yet to arrest the Northern youths and also talked about how the force is tackling kidnapping among other sundry issues.

It appears that the security challenges in the country are overwhelming the police. Is that why you have been unable to effectively tackle crimes across the country?

It would be wrong for anybody to say we don’t tackle crimes effectively across the country. The police force is more sophisticated at tackling crimes and criminality. A lot of people have commended the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for the landmark achievements we have recorded in this short period. You would recall that it was early this year that we ended the reign of Vampire, the kidnapper in Imo State and South South. The arrest of another kidnapper, Evans, is still fresh in people’s memories in which investigation is ongoing with a lot of revelations emanating from this. The police have recorded these achievements without any support from any external (security) agencies. We equally arrested the people who kidnapped the deputy high commissioner of Sierra Leone. We can also recall the arrest of the gang members responsible for the kidnap of Ambassador Bagudu in Kaduna. The gang members who abducted the Turkish school pupils in Lagos have been arraigned in court. These are all due to the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force. We have also made significant progress in ending communal clashes even before the advent of the administration of IG Idris. We have done a lot of things that are significant to making Nigeria crime-free. It would be wrong to say we are overwhelmed because we are not overwhelmed. We are also introducing new strategies and measures to make the Force more proactive and to reduce crimes and criminality to the minimum. There is no society that is crime-free. Even after leaving the Garden of Eden, one of the sons of Adam and Eve committed a capital crime. We have improved seriously on our intelligence gathering because that it is the key thing. The IG also came on board with community engagement to get the buy-in of the people into the police activities and this led to the creation of the Eminent Persons’ Forum.

If the police are not overwhelmed, how come you have been unable to deal with the killer Fulani herdsmen across the country?

It would be wrong for anybody to assume this because in the last one week, there has not been any major Fulani herdsmen/farmers clashes.

But it happened in Benue this week…

That was a pocket of incidents which was not like what we had previously. A security summit was held by the IG in collaboration with the National Traditional Council of Nigeria and Leadership newspaper recently in which representatives of farmers and herdsmen were present and others. It was a huge success for the Force because most of the underlying factors were discussed and a communique was issued which would be sent to the Federal Government for implementation. We have recorded successes in that regard in letting people know we are all Nigerians and we can live together. No matter the number of personnel you are deploying to any community, we need people to assist us to ensure we live together in peace. We had few clashes between farmers and herdsmen of recent, we have been able to deal with it. Due to the Economic Community of West African States protocols on movement, most of the herdsmen crossed the borders to graze their cows, but we are doing our best and very soon, herdsmen/farmers clashes would become history.

The pupils kidnapped from a Lagos school have been in captivity for about a month and the parents recently said they paid the kidnappers N10m and had not heard from them. Have the police forgot about the pupils already?

No, we haven’t. In fact, we have put resources together to ensure that they are promptly rescued. I wouldn’t want to disclose what we are doing for the children’s safety. At previous times, we discouraged people from paying ransom because when you do, you encourage the kidnappers. We are doing our best and in a very short time, the children would be re-united with their families. The IG has put in all the best and he is concerned; we can feel the frustrations of the parents, their anguish, but I want to assure that those children will be rescued and re-united with their families.

Some people have alleged that when the relatives of top government officials are kidnapped, like the time the wife of the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, was abducted, the police often deploy everything in their arsenal, including helicopters and so on, to find and rescue the victims. But when common citizens are involved, the story is different. Don’t common citizens deserve the same kind of treatment?

No, this is not correct, every Nigerian deserves security and our first responsibility under the constitution is the protection of lives and property. We don’t treat people on the basis of their social status. Maybe it’s because the media often sensationalise or give prominence to anything involving dignitaries, but we treat all the cases the same way. There are no two kidnap incidents that are the same; the circumstances and situations are always different. A pupil that was abducted in Karu on his way from school was rescued and re-united with the parents. We have always responded the same way regardless of the status of the victims. When I paraded Evans in Lagos, I told the press that his arrest was the beginning of the end for kidnappers.

Why don’t the police take care of their own? If the video of the bank robbery incident at Owerri had not surfaced online, the public would not have known that the policeman who survived and the families of the dead ones had been abandoned by the police.

Breaking: Supreme Court Sacks Senator, House Of Reps Member

Nobody abandoned them. The police have embedded in the Police Act what a policeman is entitled to if he dies or is sick. We also have insurance policy for those who die and it has been approved by the Federal Government. Every policeman is covered by insurance and the compensation is paid after death. The families of deceased policemen are being paid. You would remember that we distribute cheques to the beneficiaries during the monthly IG conference. Outside that, the burial expenses and other compensations are also borne by the police. It is not because the video went viral that we decided to take up the issue, we have always risen up to the occasion when the need arises for us to take care of our personnel; personnel welfare is very dear to the IG’s heart. He had directed that the deceased policemen be promoted posthumously and those injured should get free medical care and also be promoted. Beyond that, we ensure that the families of slain policemen are not allowed to suffer, we have provisions for their wellbeing.

Why did it take the police four months to announce posthumous promotions for the dead policemen and promised that their families would get their entitlements?

It doesn’t take that long to honour them. The fact is that there are procedures involved. The CP had written and the IG had approved the recommendation. Within a short space of time, they were promoted. Apart from the promotion, they were given commendation for acts of bravery.

Are you saying the families of the slain policemen have been paid their entitlements now?

I wont be able to confirm that, but I know they have worked everything out to pay them. All the medical expenses incurred by the injured policemen have been paid by the police force; for the insurance policy, it is the companies that would pay them.

Some people wonder why the police were quick to arrest Yoruba people after the Ile-Ife crisis and reluctant to carry out arrests after the quit notice given by some northern youths to Igbo people in the region. Why is that so?

When you see people killing innocent people, going after them from house to house, you cannot ask why were the police quick in arresting them. It would be wrong for anyone to compare the two cases. We had wanton destruction of property at Ife. Anyone drawing parallel lines between the two cases either on ethnic or whatsoever consideration is not doing the nation any good. We rose to the occasion during the Ife crisis and you know Ife and environs had been known for protracted crisis. We swiftly moved in and restored law and order and ensured that the perpetrators were arrested and as I speak with you, they are being prosecuted. When you talk of the Arewa youths, on the other hand, we are looking for them. Anybody who violates the law must be arrested. There is no basis for comparison between the two incidents.

Is there any move to arrest the Arewa youths?

I think I have answered this question. The IG has directed that no individual has the right to ask another Nigerian to relocate from or to any part of the country. Everyone has the right to live and do business in any part of the country and to have property as stated in the constitution. The IG has issued a warning, he equally directed the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the zone and CP in charge of the command that they should do everything to make sure that the threat is not actualised.

There is a gang called Badoo in Lagos that has been killing people mercilessly and it has been getting away with the gruesome murders. Any hope for Badoo’s victims and potential ones?

The victims must get justice; some of the Badoo boys have been arrested and they are in custody and we are still making more arrests. This brings to the fore the need for parents and guardians to keep a tab on their children and wards. We are dealing with the situation and we are recording successes. In the past three weeks, you have not heard about any single incident because we have changed our tactics. The police division under the supervision of the Lagos CP has been doing its best. We want young people to know that anything related to cultism or violence is unlawful and we are making sure that all such groups are dealt with appropriately.

Read What Senators, House Of Reps Members Are Now Doing For Fear Of Kidnapping, Murder

Nigerian lawmakers have resorted to dumping their official vehicle number plates in light of the rising cases of kidnapping of prominent citizens including politicians, PUNCH reports.

Just three weeks ago, a lawmaker from Kano State, Mr. Garba Umar-Durbunde, was kidnapped by gunmen along the Abuja-Kaduna Road, after which he reportedly paid N10m ransom to secure his freedom.

Senator Jonah Jang’s aide was killed by kidnappers last weekend and it was said that the former Plateau State governor was the target.

Investigations showed that one of the strategies adopted by many federal lawmakers was to lie low to avoid being identified in public and drawing attention to themselves.

It was learnt that many senators and House of Representatives’ members no longer use official number plates on their vehicles in a bid to keep starring eyes in check.

For instance, a member of the House of Representatives, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that in the past, it was prestigious and fashionable for legislators to use their official number plates but not anymore because of the level of insecurity in the country.

The member asked, “Look around, how many members do you see using their number plates with ‘Rep’ boldly written and displayed?

“Before now, it was fashionable to do so. The number plates could open the way for you because it identified you as a VIP; but not anymore because of security concerns.

“These days, people do not want to be identified as lawmakers. When a member uses the official number plate, you will find out that it will be covered.

“Covering the plates ordinarily means that they are not riding in the vehicles, but the truth is that they are there in them.

“Generally, they want to keep a low profile. Some prefer that they are not noticed at all than for them to be noticed with a retinue of policemen, which draws attention.”

A senator, who also spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being identified as a target by kidnappers, confirmed that some of his colleagues had also stopped using their official number plates for security reasons, saying “everyone is being careful not to draw attention to themselves because kidnapping is on the increase and you can’t know who is good and who is planning evil.”

The lawmaker representing Oyo South Senatorial District, Senator Adesoji Akanbi, said that inasmuch as he was not keen on going about with his personal security detail, the rising spate of insecurity in the country, especially kidnappings of rich and prominent Nigerians for ransom, had changed his view.

Akanbi said he had stopped going on road trips except when it is unavoidable, adding that he was also considering getting more security attachment.

He said, “I believe that it is the duty of the government to protect lives and properties. Either as a lawmaker or not, the government owes you that duty. But being a lawmaker exposes you to such people (criminals) more and I believe that the onus is on all of us (lawmakers) to take our security seriously.

“Someone like me did not believe in going around with persons for security but right now, I have to start thinking about it. I didn’t believe that there was the need to move about with security detail, the reason being that I am loved in my constituency and connected with them.

“But it is getting beyond that now and we now have to take our security seriously. The law enforcement agencies must also support us lawmakers.”

When asked if he had made adjustments to his movements, especially on the roads, Akanbi replied, “Of course, road travels have disappeared on my radar especially now that the airports are operating. It is now suicidal to go on road trips unless something urgent happens and there are no flights.”

Also, Senator Danjuma La’ah (Peoples Democratic Party, Kaduna South), expressed his fears over the spate of robberies and kidnappings in the country. He specifically identified the Abuja-Kaduna Road as becoming a national embarrassment.

La’ah, who accused security agencies of failing to protect lives and properties, therefore, called for the establishment of vigilante groups.

He said, “Certainly, I am jittery. As a matter of fact, I am not safe, not to mention the fact that there are other people too. If I could have security at my own end, all other persons should have security as well. The security in my constituency is not enough. The policemen and soldiers (deployed in the area) are not doing well, I must confess.

“It is a difficult situation and we are trying to find a solution to it; that is why we are calling for the creation of vigilante groups. If we continue to rely on policemen and soldiers; honestly, at the end of the day, somebody will come and pick us up from our homes, butcher us and kill our families. The earlier we find a solution to it, the better.”

When asked if he still took the Abuja-Kaduna Road, which leads to his constituency, but where several armed robbery and kidnapping incidents had been recorded, La’ah said, “In fact, Kaduna-Abuja Road is a very terrible road, so much that if the Federal Government does not live to its expectation (on the security of its users), it will be a disgrace.”

The senator expressed fear that the security situation might get to the point where foreign diplomats would be kidnapped and it would lead to diplomatic rows between Nigeria and foreign allies.

Another senator from the South-West, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she had also limited her movements on Nigerian roads.

She added that as part of her tactics to reduce her road trips, she designed her schedule such that she could combine multiple activities in one trip.

She said, “It is very clear that the government is not capable or proactive enough to prevent kidnappings. Before relatives of a kidnapped victim get the ransom to pay and even after payment, the victim would have suffered. Some people could die in the process.

“Now, we have to reduce visits; we now have to achieve more things in one trip so that one is not on the road every time. If you are on the road, so many things you did not envisage could happen. So, one has to be very careful.”

Further investigations indicated that lawmakers from the South-East and South-South have also beefed up security around themselves.

A lawmaker from a state in the South-South, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “There was a time when kidnapping was an everyday problem in the South-East and South-South states.

“We members from the zones always had additional armed personnel for protection and the situation remains the same till today. We always travel home well guarded.”

The lawmaker confided that he was in his village without his police orderly to avoid attracting undue attention to himself.

“I am in my village right now, but do you know that people are not aware that I am at home?

“My orderly is in Abuja. I am comfortable this way. If they sight him, they will start sniffing around, asking whether I am at home,” the member of the House of Representatives added.

The Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Abdulrazak Namdas, said on some occasions, members might need the services of extra policemen or other security personnel.

NASS Under Attack From Fashola, Others For Lagos-Ibadan Road, 2nd Niger Bridge Budget Cuts

The National Assembly is currently under attack from prominent groups and economic experts for reducing the budgetary allocations for projects such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and the Second Niger Bridge, PUNCH reports.

It was gathered that the lawmakers reduced the budget for the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway from N31bn to N10bn, while the vote for the Second Niger Bridge was cut from N15bn to N10bn.

But as against N115bn budgeted for the federal lawmakers in 2016, the National Assembly hiked its budget to N125bn in 2017.

Condemning the lawmakers, civil rights organisations said the National Assembly, by slashing allocations for the projects and increasing its own votes, had shown that it was selfish.

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), had raised the alarm over the insertion of projects outside the purview of his ministry into the 2017 Appropriation Act by the National Assembly.

Fashola said it was unfair to the executive arm for the inclusion of such projects after public hearings on the budget and defence of the fiscal estimates by the ministries.

‘IPOB Members Will Boycott Anambra Governorship Elections In November Unless……’ – Nnamdi Kanu

“What I have in my budget now is primary health care centres, boreholes,” he said at an interactive session with journalists.

“That was the meeting we had with the Acting President and that was the reason why the budget was not signed on time.

“We were asked to complete those abandoned projects; the budget of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway was reduced by the National Assembly from N31bn to N10bn.

“We owe the contractors about N15bn and they have written to us that they are going to shut down.

“Also, the budget of the 2nd Niger bridge was reduced from N15bn to N10bn and about N3bn or so was removed from the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja road budget.’’

Fashola added the federal legislators did not spare the efforts to improve power supply in the country as it also slashed the votes to a few major power projects.

The minister stated, “Everybody is complaining about power supply but they also cut the budget for Mambila power project and the Bodo Bridge that connects the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Station.

“If after we have defended the budget and we have gone and the legislature unilaterally changed the budget, what is the purpose of deliberation?’’

The minister said apart from the 200 uncompleted roads he inherited from the previous administration, the lawmakers added 100 roads.

The minister added, “These roads are not federal roads and some of them do not have designs. How do we award roads that were not designed irrespective of the power you have?

“It is unconstitutional for the National Assembly to legislate on state roads.

‘I Am Yet To Receive Anything From INEC’ – Melaye Reacts To Recall Process Against Him

“The executive controls all the machinery for collecting taxes and other revenue with relevant data from the ministries of finance, physical planning and the Budget Office and others.

“I am not saying that the legislature cannot contribute to the budget, but I hold the view that it cannot increase the budget because they do not collect the revenue with which to run or implement the budget.”

Fashola, the immediate past Lagos State governor, canvassed interdependence and collaboration among the three arms of government rather than independence to ensure a harmonious relationship.

The minister said without it, the country would be bogged down by the politics of total separation of powers.

“The society benefits more from the power of example and interdependence rather than the example (show) of power; it requires that we show good examples,” he said.

Fashola, however, blamed the electorate for putting pressure on the lawmakers to provide all manner of projects for them.

“There is the need for mass orientation and enlightenment for Nigerians not to expect their elected representatives to provide roads, water, light and execute capital projects, which are the functions of the executive arm,” the former governor stated.

How Evans Obtained Ghanaian Passport For Himself Under False Name, Asare Nelson

Notorious kidnapper, Chikwuduben Onwuamadike alias Evans obtained his Ghanaian passport with a fake name, the Nigerian Police intelligence has revealed.

According to a document from the Nigeria Police Force, Onwuamadike was issued a Ghanaian passport on January 10, 2013 with a Ghanaian name, Asare Nelson.

The Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris at the meeting of West African Police Chiefs in Accra on Tuesday, revealed that the notorious kidnapper has a Ghanaian passport and cautioned the Ghanaian authorities to tighten modalities for the issuance of passports.

According to a document obtained by the Inspector-General of Police (IG) Intelligence Response Team (IRT), the Accra Passport office issued the passport in the name of Asare Nelson.

Speaking on Evans’ arrest, Idris said information sharing was crucial to tackling the menace of trans-border crimes in West Africa.

He said: “It is through such exchange that we were able to nab a Ghanaian/Nigerian kidnapper two weeks ago, after evading arrest for many years.

“For several years, Evans terrorised Nigerians and nationals of many countries across West Africa. Efforts to apprehend him did not yield the desired results until we spread our search net wider.”

The IG also urged the Ghanaian authorities to investigate how Evans got the Ghanaian passport.

He added: “Nigerians are celebrating the arrest of the Nigerian/Ghanaian kidnapper… because he has the Ghanaian passport… something you guys have to look at.”

The Nigerian Police report further indicated that Evans relocated his wife and five children to Ghana, because of his kind of business.

Evans was arrested while trying to drive out of his palatial Magodo residence on Saturday June 10.

Ohanaeze, Afenifere, Balarabe Musa React As Kwankwaso Backs Anti-Igbo Threat

Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso’s opposition to the call for the arrest of Northern youths that issued a three-month ultimatum to Ndigbo residing in the Northern states have been condemned by pan-Yoruba group, Afenifere and the Ohanaeze Ndigbo.

Prominent Nigerians and groups including Afenifere, Ohanaeze and the Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, have demanded the arrest of the youths by security agents.

But Kwankwaso was reported on Thursday, June 22, to have opposed the call for the arrest of the youths.

The former Kano State governor in an interview with journalists in Abuja on Wednesday said the youths should be engaged in dialogue.

However, Afenifere and Ohanaeze, in separate interviews described the former governor’s position as unfortunate.

The Deputy Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Mr. Chuks Ibegbu, who spoke with one of our correspondents in Enugu, said Kwankwaso’s position should be probed.

The Ohanaeze spokesman said, “Nobody is above the law so the security agencies should investigate him.

“We want to warn that those that are fanning the embers of disunity should desist from doing so, because, if at the end of the day, the country descends to anarchy, they will also lose out.”

Ibegbu added that Kwankwaso’s statement did not come as a surprise. “We have not forgotten that when he was governor, he stated that there was no need for more states to be created in the South-East. He said the land mass of the South-East would not support a new state, but he chose to forget the fact that state creation is not just about land mass but population.

‘Why Ndigbo Cannot Afford To Vacate The Northern States’ – Kwankwaso

He advised Kwankwaso, whom he said wanted to be President of Nigeria, to turn a new leaf.

The spokesman for Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said he was not surprised by the ex-governor’s utterances, noting that he had always been known for his bigotry.

He stated that Kwankwaso was trying to position himself as a defender of the Arewa.

Odumakin said his statement had further confirmed the widely held notion that the northern youths had backers.

He said, “He (Kwankwaso) is trying to position himself as a defender of the Arewa and anyone who knows him over the years would have observed his bigotry and it shows clearly that he doesn’t believe in Nigeria.

“When a crisis happened in Ife, it was Kwankwaso that was making incendiary remarks and yet there are rumours that he wants to be president of Nigeria. We have noted his utterances.”

“When people like him talk about one Nigeria, it is pure deception. I endorse what the Southern Nigeria Youths Coalition said that they wanted a referendum to determine the future of the country. I support their plan to retaliate any genocide against the Igbo in the North,” the Afenifere chieftain said.

Also, a former governor of old Kaduna State, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, said Kwankwaso’s call to negotiate with Arewa youths was wrong, adding that the northern youths drumming the quit notice should be arrested.

Balarabe Musa said the arrest would serve as “deterrence” and uncover the sponsors of the youths calling for a quit notice.
