‘Russian Players May Have Used Drugs During 2014 World Cup’- FIFA

The entire Russia squad to the 2014 World Cup is being examined by FIFA for suspected doping.

World football’s governing body has confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

The Russian team that lost in the group stages in Brazil three years ago are among at least 34 Russian footballers in the list of over 1,000 athletes listed as “people of interest” in reports commissioned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, WADA, on state-sponsored interference in 30 sports.

FIFA spokesperson told the Mail, “FIFA is still investigating the allegations made against [Russian] football players.”

Russia is currently hosting the FIFA Confederations Cup in preparation to host the next World Cup in 2018.

Five of the players from the 2014 squad including Igor Akinfeev, Denis Glushakov, Maksim Kanunnikov, Aleksandr Samedov and Yuri Zhirkov are in the current team eliminated on Saturday following a loss to Mexico.

Former WADA chief Dick Pound said, “There is a huge onus on FIFA to reach a sensible conclusion on these matters before the World Cup takes place.

“It is incumbent on them to say what steps they are taking, what they find, and take whatever action necessary to protect the integrity of sport.

“Even within a governing body with as little credibility remaining as FIFA, if you were a senior official you wouldn’t want to be part of a body that ignores this.

“There has been an institutional denial of doping in football for years … I’ve seen too many presentations by FIFA, straight out of fantasy land, about how they don’t have a problem. They absolutely have to take this case seriously.”

Pogba Opens Up On Griezmann Snubbing Manchester United (Read)

Manchester United midfielder, Paul Pogba, has said he can handle his international team-mate, Antoine Griezmann, moving anywhere, even if it is to rivals, Manchester City.

Griezmann was heavily linked with a move to United during the close season, but will now stay at Atletico Madrid after signing a new deal last month.

Pogba hopes his international colleague will be content wherever his career takes him

He also used the opportunity to send a message to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was released by United.

Pogba told Telefoot: “Griezmann? I wish for his happiness. If that is at Atletico, at City, I will handle it. He is one of the best players in the world.

“If Zlatan is happy elsewhere, then I am happy for him.

“For my first season we got three trophies and a place in the Champions League which was the main objective. I’m going to the Champions League, that’s what I wanted.

“Next year, the objective is the Premier League. There is also the Champions League and we will have to give that proper attention.”

Federal Government Declares Nigeria Is Now Free From Meningitis (Read Details)

The Federal Government has declared Nigeria free from the latest ‘Type C’ deadly Cero Spinal Meningitis (CSM).

The declaration comes after the CSM claimed almost 2,000 lives in the country since its outbreak in late 2016.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, said with the decline in Meningitis cases, the 2016/2017 Meningitis outbreak was over and the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) responding to the epidemic has been stepped down.

He further added that the outbreak has been in constant decline for eight weeks and the affected States have recorded much fewer new cases.

In the last four weeks, he said, “no Local Government Area has reached outbreak alert threshold. By the 16th of June 2017 when the EOC was stepped down, a total of 14,518 suspected cases of meningitis were reported from 25 states, with 1,166 deaths, giving a case fatality rate of 8%.”

Ihekweazu explained that NCDC, the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency (NPHCDA) and partner organisations worked assiduously to reduce the impact of the outbreak on affected communities.

According to him, the NCDC established a National EOC, which coordinated the national outbreak response.

This, he said, included the deployment of Rapid Response Teams (RRT) to the most affected States to strengthen surveillance, case management, laboratory capacity and risk communication.

Ihekweazu said: “The planning process to prevent future outbreaks and ensuring better preparedness for the next epidemic season has begun. Laboratory capacity has been improved with the recent operationalisation of the new National Reference Laboratory in Gaduwa, Abuja with support from the Federal Ministry of Health, the US CDC and the World Health Organisation.

“NCDC is also coordinating a network of laboratories across the country to improve case confirmation capacity. National guidelines towards responding to future outbreaks are being developed together with ongoing continuous awareness campaigns, keeping the general public informed. Workshops to improve preparedness are also being organised.”

The NCDC boss stated that the reactive vaccination campaigns led by the NPHCDA were successfully conducted in Zamfara, Sokoto, Yobe and Katsina States. The state governments were fully engaged in conducting these campaigns to ensure that the vaccines reached the most at-risk population.

He said: “While NCDC has stepped down the Emergency response, the work never stops – we will continue to work 24/7 to ensure the protection of all Nigerians against infectious disease threats. We recognise our leadership, the Honorable Ministers of Health and the leadership of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency for the joint support during the outbreak.

“We are very grateful to the Government of Zamfara and Sokoto States for their excellent leadership during the outbreak. We also thank our partners including the World Health Organisation, Africa Centre for Disease Control, as well as the US Centers for Disease Control and its implementing partners –

African Field Epidemiology Network and the University of Maryland Baltimore – for their generous support in the implementation of outbreak response activities.”

Breaking News: Senator Releases 13 Prison Inmates In Jigawa

Sen. Sabo Nakudu (APC- Jigawa Central) has facilitated the release of 13 inmates from prison in the state.

Mr Adam Muhammad, the spokesman of the state command of the Nigeria Prison Service (NPS), confirmed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Dutse on Sunday.

He said the inmates were released from three prisons in the state.

The spokesman said seven of the inmates were released from Jahun satellite prison, while five secured freedom from Gwaram satellite prison.

One inmate was also released from Kiyawa satellite prison.

According to him, Nakudu also donated one sack of garri and one sack of groundnut cake to Ringim satellite prison.

The spokesman did not, however, state the amount the senator paid to free the inmates.

Muhammad further told NAN that a philanthropist, Alhaji Umar Bala donated drugs and other items to the Hadejia medium prison.

” Alhaji Umar Bala D.O donated essential drugs, 100 eating plates and cups, bread as well as 100 bags of sachet water,” Muhammad said.

Reacting to the gesture of Nakudu and Bala the state Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association , Mr Baffa Alhassan, described the lawmaker’s intervention as commendable.

Alhassan noted that the gesture would help in decongesting prisons in the state.

He also commended the philanthropist for complementing the Federal Government’s efforts in providing services to the inmates.

“I think other wealthy individuals in the state should emulate this philanthropist by doing all in their power to complement the work of the Federal Government,” he advised.

LAUTECH : Osun Govt Calls For Intervention – Management

Osun State Government has called on members of the public to prevail on the management and staff of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) to be opened and sincere on ending the lingering crisis rocking the university.

The state government, in a press statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Adelani Baderinwa, on Sunday, said it is concerned about the plight of the students of the institution, hence the need to alert the public on what is going on in the LAUTECH.

According to press statement, the state government was worried on and doing all humanly possible to resolve the crisis and ensure quick resumption, notwithstanding the selfish politics being played by some people, management union and staff of the institution.

The government claimed that some elements within the university were not sincere on resolving the matter, saying that such people are grandstanding and deliberately stifling efforts to pull out the institution out of the crisis.

The government said the setting up of the Chief Wole Olanipekun led visitation panel which recommended auditing of the university, is a bold step taken by the Osun and Oyo states government to ensure a lasting solution to the crisis.

Based on the recommendation, the state government said the two owner states engaged the service of KPMG to audit the university accounts, disclosing that ‘internal enemies’ in the institution are frustrating the auditing exercise.

It maintained despite the resolve of Governor Rauf Aregbesola and Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo states to bring lasting solution to the institution crisis, the some members of staff and management are sabotaging the owners’ efforts.

The Osun government commended Ajimobi’s administration for its understanding and commitment to bring back LAUTECH to live.

The press release reads: “It is worrisome and disturbing, especially in this present recession time, to know that LAUTECH runs 97 bank accounts when the Treasury Single Account (TSA) has become the order of the day. There are 10 Chief Accountants which is not so in other universities.

“More worrisome too is that LAUTECH has lost money in many distressed banks according to the report of the visitation panel.

“For 27 years of existence, Osun Government lived up to its expectations as equal partner , notwithstanding the obvious cheating meted to it as only one (1) out of the eight (cool academic faculties is in Osun, while Oyo has about twice of the staff strength of the University.

“Osun single-handedly funded the infrastructure development in the Osun campus; also 85 per cent of the total institution’s infrastructure is in Oyo, whereas funding is equally carried out. Despite this, we are fully committed to joint ownership of our joint heritage. Indeed, we staunchly fought for it in 2010 when effort was mis-advisedly made”

The state government said it was worried about the level of mismanagement of funds in the university, saying that the institution should have been self-sufficient financially by now.

“Osun State University with student population of about 9000 with six campuses which implies more recurrent cost and just nine years old like some other state University in the country are surviving.

“It is surprising that a more viable LAUTECH with students population of 26,360 undergraduates paying average of N70, 000 tuition fee, part-time students of over 2000 paying average of N120, 000, 1560 academic postgraduate students paying N150, 000; professional post-graduate students of 2600 paying average of N250, 000, pre-degree, distant learning and other programmes cannot survive on its own.

“While ventures in other institutions thrive, that of LAUTECH is dead. TETFUND and Needs Assessment Funds running into billions have been given to LAUTECH without commensurate research output to show for it.

“Right-thinking members of the society should please prevail on LAUTECH management and staff to allow owner governments to do the right thing – proper auditing which invariably will ensure proper running of the institution and make it responsive to the essence of its establishment”, it added.

WOW! My Relationship with Chidinma – Flavour Finally Clears the Air

Handsome Nigerian singer of South-east descent has discussed his relationship with singer Chidinma amidst other issues relating to music, family life and his lifestyle in a recent interview.

Popular singer, Chinedu Okoli, aka Flavour N’abania, speaks to Tofarati Ige of Punch newspaper about his career.

Can you recall how you started your music career?

I have always loved everything about music from an early age. I actually started out playing drums for a live band at the age of 15. After that, I started playing the keyboard and from there, I began singing. I later got a scholarship to study music and that is how I developed as a musician.

What was the reaction of your parents?

You know parents are usually wary of the entertainment industry because they feel a lot of immoral things happen there. But the music scholarship that I got really helped me. It taught me a lot about the job and how to be a professional. I had a particular director who told me that people usually think that musicians are wayward, irresponsible and ostentatious.

He also told me that if I want to make a difference in my career, I have to be responsible, disciplined, and constantly hone my skill. Talent is never enough as one has to put in a lot of work as well.

What was your experience like when you started your career in the eastern part of the country?

It was wonderful and I had a good time then. I used to perform with a live band at different places and people loved it. I was already popular in the East before I decided to relocate to Lagos and start afresh. I had to leave everything behind and start from the scratch in Lagos.

I even had a car back then but when I came to Lagos, I arrived with just a bag. It was quite tough in the early stage but because I had made up my mind never to give up until I achieved my dream, I kept working hard at it. I’m thankful that I have become an international star now.

What are the qualities that have been working for you over time?

I would say it’s discipline, hard work and the grace of God. I know that I still have a lot of things ahead of me, so I try to manage myself. I don’t have to give all of myself now when I still have many more years to live. I also have to maintain the standard. Getting there is not the problem; it is about staying there, so I need my discipline game to be 100 per cent. I also ensure I work every day and give the people what they want to hear. Right from the onset, I have always sought to distinguish myself and set myself apart from the rest.

I have never compromised on my originality and I always make sure that I am down to earth. If you look at all my albums, you will see that I keep improving. I strive to do better than what I had done before. And I believe that’s the secret to success; if you are original and humble, you will always be reckoned with. Even though the money is good, it is not really about that for me; I care more about the art. I work in the studio virtually every day.

What are you working on at the moment?

I will be releasing my fifth studio album soon.

Would you be having international collaborations on it?

Yes, there are some though I cannot reveal much about that for now.

What do you regard as your selling point as an artiste?

I think it is for the fans to say but I think it’s everything about me, Ijele.

You’re seen as some sort of s*x symbol, how does that make you feel?

It feels great and it is a motivation for me to keep working hard on my music and also my body. I visit the gym three times in a week even with my busy schedule. Though it is not easy, it is what I have to do.

Yemi Alade once said she has a crush on you, do you feel the same way about her?

Yemi Alade is a very fantastic talent and she is a hard-working woman as well. I admire her a lot as an artiste.

At a point, you were also quite close to Chidinma; is she someone you can date?

These people you are mentioning are colleagues that I respect a lot. We have had opportunity to work several times in the past and I wouldn’t deny that we have a good chemistry.

What’s your relationship with your baby mamas and children?

I have a wonderful relationship with my children and I love them so much. I am also on good terms with their mothers and everything is fine.

Do you sometimes wish things didn’t actually go that way?

There is no point regretting anything in life. Whatever will be will be. I can only do my best at all times.

What kind of woman does Flavour like?

I love a woman who is not fake; she has to be natural at all times. She has to be someone who knows the difference between Flavour and Chinedu. To cap it all, she must be God-fearing.

What’s the funniest experience you’ve ever had with a fan?

I have had so many crazy experiences with fans. But it’s all good because I know they appreciate me even though they could be crazy about the way they show it sometimes. The way they express it might not be the way one wants it at that moment but at the end of the day, it’s all about love. There have been times I go to some African countries to perform and the stadiums are usually filled up, with some people even crying. That makes me emotional because it shows that there is nobody that cannot make it, despite the background. I appreciate the fans always.

How do you prepare yourself before going on stage?

There’s no special preparation that I do. I always just try to be myself in whatever I’m doing. I just free myself and make sure I give the fans a good time. I have had a lot of performances over the years and I try to get better over the years. And I think I have been able to do well in that regard. I also love to perform with my live band whenever I can.

How do you draw your inspiration?

I get inspiration from the people around me. Right from time, I always relate with people who are older and more experienced than I am. That way, I get to learn a lot of important things. I like original and creative people who I can tap from. I also draw inspiration from the things that happen around me, or from what I read. I am never in a hurry when writing songs; I love to take my time and get it right. If I don’t feel a connection with the lyrics and beat of a song, I wouldn’t release it. I see a song as a piece of art or like when you are cooking a pot of soup. Every ingredient has to be in the right proportion for it to come out well. And that’s what I do.

What has stardom robbed you off?

Stardom has robbed me of a lot of things but I believe that, in life, there is no gain without pain. Ordinarily, I love to lead a simple life but that’s not possible anymore. As human beings, there could also be times that I’m dealing with some personal issues but people wouldn’t want to know. They would expect you to be smiling all the time; and if you don’t, they would accuse you of being proud and snobbish. But the beautiful thing is that I am living my dream.

Do you have plans to bring up new talents like some of your colleagues are doing?

Yes, it is something I have always wanted to do. But the industry is not well set up; the African music scene is still growing. I wouldn’t want to sign deals with people and have issues with them later.

What kind of issues?

It’s common around here to have contract breaches and other things like that. And there really isn’t anything in place to protect your investment.

How do you like to dress?

I always love to appear classy at all times. I also like clothes that show off my muscle because I do a lot of hard work to have bulging biceps.

Apart from music, what other interests do you have?

I love football and if not for music, I’m sure I would have become a footballer.

How do you unwind?

I watch football a lot and I also play video games.

5000 Cultists Allegedly Becomes Born Again At Kumuyi’s Crusade In Ogoni Rivers

Several cultists operating in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria have reportedly turned a new leaf after being touched by the preaching of Pastor Kumuyi.

Five thousand cultists in Ogoni land, Rivers state, have on Friday night, renounced their membership of different cult groups and accepted Christ as Lord and Saviour at a peace and unity crusade organised by different denominations in conjunction with Deeper Christian Life Ministry in Bori , Rivers state.

The cultists who gave their lives to Christ shortly after a sermon delivered by the General Superintendent of the Deeper Life Bible Church, Pastor Williams Folorunso Kumuyi blamed politicians for using them for their selfish goals after which they were dumped to suffer hardship.

One of the church leaders, who spoke to NAIJ after the crusade, said Pastor Kumuyi had earlier met with religious leaders, traditional rulers, youths and community leaders where he asked them to set aside their differences and harness their weaknesses and strengths in order to enthrone peace so as to attract development to the region.

At the meeting which was held at the convocation arena of the Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Pastor Kumuyi made it clear that peace and development could only thrive, if the Ogoni people learn to forgive each other, forget their past differences and determine to work together for a better and prosperous life for their people.

He said animosity and hatred could only breed communal clashes, violence and distrust even as he sued for peaceful co-existence among the various clans that make up the Ogoni land.

Pastor Kumuyi assured them that with peace and unity in Ogoni land, God will turn the hearts of government at all levels towards the oil rich community which will lead to progress and prosperity.

He said that when God must have finished doing His wonders in Ogoni, the people will look at their past like a child’s play; saying that the best of their past will be the least in all their endeavours.
